A logbook is an easy way to keep track of your mileage to claim back from SARS, and we’ve made an easy to use one for you.

The Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 allows taxpayers in South Africa (who receive a travel allowance) to claim a tax deduction for any business mileage travelled, using their personal car (i.e. not a company car or employer’s fleet vehicle).

This means that anyone who uses their personal vehicle for business can claim back, if they’re doing any of the following:

  • travelling to clients for business
  • travelling to and from sales meetings
  • running errands for your employer) should be keeping a logbook

Your logbook provides the South African Revenue Service (SARS) with proof of the mileage you’ve travelled throughout a particular tax period. Without an accurate logbook, you won’t be able to benefit from a tax deduction.

Download our handy, printable logbook, and keep it with you in your cubby so that you never lose track of your mileage. By writing down your mileage daily, you’ll find submitting your tax return is a breeze.
