Follow the heartwarming journey of South African Olympian Emma Chelius and her loyal Suzuki Swift, Scooby. From university road trips and Olympic trials to the ultimate full-circle moment, discover why Suzuki is more than just a car brand; it's a member of the family.

Key Takeaways

  • Reliability: Emma’s story highlights the long-term durability of the Suzuki Swift, lasting over a decade and multiple cross-country moves.
  • Brand Loyalty: The transition from a "first car" Swift to a family-oriented Jimny and potential Grand Vitara showcases Suzuki’s ability to grow with its customers.
  • Community Support: Suzuki’s active involvement in supporting South African athletes like Emma during Olympic trials demonstrates brand heart and local commitment.
  •  Versatility: From student life and road trips to professional athletic training and bringing home a newborn, the Swift adapts to every life stage.

At Suzuki, we don’t just build cars; we create family members. Every now and then, we receive a story that perfectly captures the heart of what we do. Recently, we heard from the incredible Emma Chelius (now Prinsloo), a South African Olympic swimmer who has spent the last decade chasing dreams and winning podiums with a very special teammate by her side.

The Legend of Scooby

It all started on Emma’s 18th birthday in 2014 when her parents surprised her with a Suzuki Swift. Growing up on Scooby-Doo adventures with her brother, there was only one fitting name for a car destined for big things:
Scooby.

"I knew he was going to take me all different places," Emma shares. "He just had that charm. You never know what’s around the next corner, but you’re excited to find out."

Scooby wasn’t just a car; he was a witness to Emma’s transition from teenager to a world-class athlete. He survived the tight parallel parking challenges of Stellenbosch University, carried countless friends to student nights, and served as the ultimate "vibes" hub with a sound system that punched way above its weight.

From Training Sessions to the Olympic Stage

For a professional athlete, reliability is everything. Scooby was the faithful companion for every early morning training session and those long, contemplative road trips between Durban and Stellenbosch.

When the world paused during the 2020 lockdown, Emma’s Olympic dreams didn’t. She kept training in her garage and swimming against bungee cords in a tiny home pool. When the games were finally on in 2021, Emma headed to Tokyo to represent South Africa in the 50m freestyle.

While Scooby couldn’t fly to Japan, our Suzuki family was honoured to support Emma back home, providing "Nemo" (a bright orange Suzuki) to get her and her team to and from the pool during National trials. We’ve always believed that our athletes deserve a support system as tenacious as they are.

The Ultimate Full-Circle Moment

Scooby has worn many hats over the years. He was the getaway car for Emma’s honeymoon in the Drakensberg (complete with "Just Married" scrawled in lipstick on the back window), and he’s survived three cross-country moves.

But his most important mission happened just a few months ago.

Emma and her husband recently welcomed their beautiful daughter, Lily, into the world. After ten years of adventures, it was Scooby who had the honour of bringing Lily home from the hospital for the very first time.

"I got Scooby when I was a child myself, on the brink of adulthood," Emma says. "To have come so full circle that you’re bringing your own child home in the same car is just amazing. He’s been that constant the whole way."

A New Chapter Begins

With a growing family, Emma and her husband (a proud Jimny driver!) are starting to talk about finding a "mom car" with a bit more space for prams and baby gear. While they’ve been eyeing the Fronx and the Grand Vitara, one thing is certain: they’ll always be a Suzuki household.

Scooby might be ready for a well-earned rest (or a second life with Emma's dad, who is already trying to claim him!), but the memories packed into that little Swift will last a lifetime.

Life is a collection of chapters, and we are so proud to provide the wheels that take you through every single one.

Here’s to the next adventure, Emma and Lily!

Yes, as Emma’s story shows, the Swift is perfect for new drivers due to its reliability, ease of parking, and durability over many years.

While the Swift is a loyal companion, Emma suggests the Suzuki Fronx or Grand Vitara are excellent "mom car" choices for those needing more space for prams and car seats.

How long does a Suzuki Swift last?

With proper care, a Suzuki Swift can easily last over a decade, as evidenced by "Scooby" supporting Emma from age 18 into her motherhood journey.
